Script Consultation & Polishing

Here is how this works in practice. Script consultation for Brazilian-shot work pulls against a deep narrative custom. Glauber Rocha's Cinema Novo manifesto ('Aesthetics of Hunger') and Black God, White Devil (1964) anchor a moral-realist custom that still informs how Brazilian audiences and ANCINE-co-production committees read scripts. Today's reference points include Walter Salles's Central Station (1998 Berlin Golden Bear, Fernanda Montenegro Oscar nomination), Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund's City of God (four Oscar nominations, including Best Adapted Screenplay) and Kleber Mendonça Filho and Juliano Dornelles's Bacurau (2019 Cannes Jury Prize).

Here is the breakdown. Brazilian Portuguese is distinct enough from European Portuguese that any script intended for Brazilian audiences needs dialect calibration our consultants build into the redraft. Brazil, the world's largest Portuguese-speaking population, spans regional registers. The list covers carioca (Rio), paulista (São Paulo), nordestino (Northeast, distinct cadence and vocabulary), gaúcho (Rio Grande do Sul, Spanish-influenced), nortista (Amazon and Pará, Tupi-Guarani-language influence). Dialogue can be checked by native readers from each shoot region.

Here is what that looks like on the ground. On the ground, indigenous-language material is developed with the communities concerned, with their consent attached for ritual or sacred material, and any filming inside Terras Indígenas needs FUNAI authorisation. The Globo telenovela three-act structure since 1965 supplies a steady reference for serial work. SECAUDIO (Secretaria do Audiovisual, Ministry of Culture) and ANCINE reading committees apply distinct review criteria from Lei Rouanet sponsorship reviewers. We calibrate decks to match. Spcine and RioFilme commission script-development grants subsidise qualifying projects from treatment through final-draft lock.
