Here is how this works in practice. A Director of Photography shapes the visual narrative of a production through creative decisions about lighting, camera movement, lens selection, and composition. Brazil's extraordinary visual diversity — from the tropical light of Rio de Janeiro to the urban energy of São Paulo — has nurtured top-tier cinematographers like Walter Carvalho and Affonso Beato ABC ASC, whose work defines Brazilian cinema's distinctive look.

Here is the short of it. We connect you with skilled Directors of Photography who know both the creative and practical demands of your production. Whether you are shooting at Estúdios Globo in Rio or on location in the Amazon, our team matches your project with DPs who bring the right visual sensibility and gear sourced through rental houses like Camera Rental Brasil and Quanta Post.

Digital Engagement

On Location

ABC-credited Brazilian DPs trained through Globo Estúdios PROJAC and the Salles / Meirelles / Padilha / Mendonça Filho features that put Brazilian cinematography on the Oscar and Cannes maps

Here is how this works in practice. Our DP roster runs from Walter Carvalho's lineage — the cinematographer behind Central Station (1998 Berlin Golden Bear) and Behind the Sun for Walter Salles — through Lula Carvalho's today's Salles collaborations, Cesar Charlone's City of God school (the only Brazilian-shot feature ever Oscar-nominated for Best Cinematography, 2003), and Adrian Teijido's Karim Aïnouz work that took Eurídice Gusmão to the 2019 Cannes Un Certain Regard prize.

Here is how the picture comes together. On the ground, most ABC (Associação Brasileira de Cinematografia) members on our books own or block-book ARRI Alexa 35, Alexa Mini LF, Sony Venice 2, and RED V-Raptor packages through Camera Rental Brasil, Quanta Post São Paulo, JL Camera Rio, and Conspiração Filmes. Cross-border top-ups out of Sigma Cine LA arrive on direct GRU/GIG flights within 12 hours when feature loadouts need extended Master Prime, Signature Prime, or DNA LF glass. Lighting plans get drafted with the gaffer team upfront so the 80–95% Rio / Salvador / Manaus humidity is never a punch-in surprise — desiccant ride-along, capsule and lens prep, dew-point logging.

Here is the short of it. Brazilian DPs read a country the way few cinematographers anywhere can: tropical hard light off Copacabana and Ipanema sand at 14:00, Pelourinho Salvador colonial colour-walls under afternoon cloud, the Niemeyer concrete-and-shadow build style of Brasília and the MASP/Paulista São Paulo CBD, Cristo Redentor and Pão de Açúcar haze layers from Helisul or Líder helicopters, Pantanal jaguar safari golden-hour windows in the Jul–Sept dry season, and the equatorial dual-light reality of Amazon Rio Negro / Solimões shoots out of Teatro Amazonas Manaus.

Here is what we have to work with. On the ground, ANCINE-registered crews carry CLT and FGTS coverage, 13º salário is budgeted on each quote, and IPHAN heritage filings (Ouro Preto UNESCO 1980, Olinda 1982, Diamantina 1999, Paraty 2019, Brasília 1987, Pelourinho 1985) are set up alongside RioFilme and Spcine permits. Lei do Audiovisual Article 1A/1B/1B-bis and Lei Rouanet sponsorship structures get factored into the spend plan so co-production credits and FSA-administered funding aren't left on the table at wrap.

FAQ

Our DP Network

What experience levels of DPs do you provide?

Here is the breakdown. We give DPs across all experience levels: emerging cinematographers for indie and low-budget projects, mid-level DPs with solid commercial and documentary credits, and senior DPs with feature film and global broadcast experience. We match experience to your budget and project needs.

How do you match DPs to projects?

We review your creative brief, reference materials, and budget to shortlist DPs with relevant genre experience and aesthetic alignment. You receive curated showreels and can request direct conversations with candidates before booking.

What camera systems do your DPs work with?

Here is what that looks like on the ground. Our DPs are proficient across all major cinema camera systems including ARRI Alexa, RED, Sony Venice, Blackmagic, and Canon cinema lines. Many specialize in specific systems but all are adaptable to production needs and rental availability.

Do DPs come with their own equipment?

Some owner-operator DPs bring personal camera packages, while others work with rented gear. We set up gear sourcing based on your preference and budget, whether through DP-owned gear, rental houses, or production-given gear.

Can you provide international DPs for shoots in Brazil?

Yes. We can source global DPs for shoots in Brazil, handling work permits and logistics. We also give Brazilian DPs for global shoots needing local cinematography talent abroad.

What's included in DP day rates?

Standard DP day rates cover on-set cinematography services during production hours. Pre-production work (tech scouts, shot listing, meetings) is mostly billed separately. Gear, camera assistants, and late hours are extra based on project scope.

Productions in Brazil that need this often pair it with Steadicam & Gimbal Operators, Drone Videography, and Underwater Camera Operators for full coverage. Most projects also draw on Virtual Production and Production Services.
